Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health Care Professionals

Overview:

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Care Professionals is specifically designed to prepare registered health care professionals to develop and adopt an educational role across a range of settings, both academic and practice based.

Participants will have a genuine interest in supporting learning and the development of effective learning environments.

You will develop your learning and teaching skills in a variety of state-of-the-art facilities, including the University’s Clinical Simulation Centre and Hydra Simulation Centre.

What’s more, you will be supported to develop specific innovations in relation to facilitating learning and be encouraged to disseminate these within your peer-group and own settings.

For healthcare professionals registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the course reflects the significant changes made in 2018 by the NMC. Successful completion will enable these students to fulfil the new roles of practice / academic assessor.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a 2:2 or above in a degree and have evidence of recent engagement with CPD activities. They must also be in a role whereby they are able to facilitate learning and assessment of learning.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Care Professionals will critically appraise and examine some key themes, including:

  • The theories, principles and evidence base which inform effective facilitation of learning, teaching and assessment in the context of your practice.
  • Promoting inclusivity and meeting the equality and diversity needs of diverse learner populations.
  • The development and enhancement of effective learning environments.
  • Professional accountability in supporting the learning and assessment of students.
  • Establishing effective relationships to support the development of students learning and competence in the educational and practice setting.

Teaching

The 60-credit course consists of a 40-credit and a 20-credit module at level 7. Both modules offer theoretical and work-based learning.

The first module runs from April through to September and the second from September to February. Study days are held on a Friday at the University’s Glyntaff Campus.

Theoretical learning will be managed through facilitated learning processes that include tutorial, workshops, role-play, participant-led learning activities and use of simulated learning environments.

There will also be best practice exemplar lectures where expert educationalists will demonstrate the innovative learning and teaching methods they employ.

Work-based–practice learning will focus on supporting learning and student assessment within the context of the participant’s practice.

Student support

Students will be allocated a Personal Tutor to offer support and guidance with all aspects of the course. Personal tutors will also offer academic supervision to help the participant prepare for summative assessments and undertake observations of the participant’s facilitation of learning and assessment.

The teaching team will actively encourage peer support and learning and facilitate the group to form a community of practice to share experiences and resources and hopefully begin some lasting network contacts.

Office hours and meetings with participants will be flexible with due consideration of participants working patterns.

Assessment

Participants will have two summative observed facilitations of learning / assessment opportunities with students. The participants will critically reflect and develop from the feedback on these sessions.

Core to being an effective facilitator of learning is to be able to develop and enhance the learning experience, therefore an element of assessment will focus on developing and leading an initiative within the participant’s context of practice to enhance the students and others learning experience.

COURSE DETAILS

We regularly revalidate courses for quality assurance and enhancement

At USW, we regularly review our courses in response to changing patterns of employment and skills demand to ensure we offer learning designed to reflect today’s student needs and tomorrow’s employer demands.

If during a review process course content is significantly changed, we’ll write to inform you and talk you through the changes for the coming year. But whatever the outcome, we aim to equip our students with the skillset and the mindset to succeed whatever tomorrow may bring. Your future, future-proofed.

Additional Costs
