MA Leadership & Management (Education)

MA Leadership & Management (Education)

Overview:

MA Leadership and Management (Education) is for those who are, or aspire to be, leaders or managers in an educational setting. You may already be working in school settings or other institutions, such as the health service or the police force. This postgraduate course is suitable for those working within a nursery setting through to those working in an adult learning environment.

You will gain a deeper and broader understanding of the latest developments in the sector, engage critically with educational and management theory ideas and research, and apply your learning to your own practice. In addition, you will also learn from others in the group, and be encouraged to share good practice and develop links with colleagues from other organisations.

Entry Requirements

You should be a graduate or, if you’re a non-graduate, you will need relevant experience. For those students who have already obtained a professional qualification (for example a NPQH) it may be possible to accredit prior learning or achievement for this work, provided that a bridging assignment is submitted (a fee of £100 is charged for supporting and assessing this assignment).

Full-time and part-time students choosing modules which have a placement component as part of the assessment process, will need to provide evidence of a current enhanced DBS check (or its equivalent if you are an EU or international student).

Full-time students wishing to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in the internship scheme, will also need to provide evidence of a current enhanced DBS check (or its equivalent if an EU or international student).

The course welcomes international applicants and requires an English level of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component or equivalent.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

You will take the following two specialist leadership and management modules:

Developing Learning in Organisations
Topics covered include the management of learning, the wellbeing agenda, the role of senior managers and the management of new curriculum initiatives, assessment for learning, pupil peer and self-assessment, the use of assessment evidence in research/inspection documentation, and analysis of quantitative assessment data to promote organisational improvement.

Developing People in Organisations
This module will appeal to those working as, or aspiring to be, leaders in institutions with an educational setting. Topics covered include team building, effective leadership, appraisal and mentoring and managing change in organisations. Different leadership models are considered alongside national initiatives, as well as a consideration of decision making strategies to overcome resistance.

You will also, in common with all of the MA Education programmes, study the core module Research Methodology and undertake either a short Dissertation (7,500 words) or a long Dissertation (15,000 words).

If you choose the short Dissertation you will take two further modules from across the MA Education programmes and if you choose the long Dissertation you will take one further module.

Staff will be able to assist you in making these choices once you have enrolled – or you can discuss these with us at one of the Open Evening events prior to enrolment. We want to make sure that you build an individual curriculum that will enable you to achieve your professional and personal needs/goals.

Teaching

Most students following the part-time programme spend two years on the taught modules (typically one evening per week) and undertake their dissertation in their third year.

Full-time students are able to complete the whole programme within 12 months.

Most of the time, full-time students will study alongside part-time students in the evenings. However, there are some classes for full time students that take place during the day, including Critical Thinking.

Assessment

The course is built on 30 credit modules, including a mandatory Research Methods module. For these 30 credit modules, the assessment is conducted via a 5000-word assignment (or equivalent). Most modules encourage students to reflect upon the module content and, where possible, to apply it to their own relevant professional or academic context, to provide an academic, critically engaged discussion of key aspects and concepts. Assessments are not conducted via examination, or via a standard set of assignment questions.

All students complete the course via a dissertation. The dissertation should focus upon an original research topic and can be completed for 30 credits (7500 words), or 60 credits (15000 words). 180 credits in total are needed to complete the full MA’.

Awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level (after completion of two taught modules) and Postgraduate Diploma level (after completion of four taught modules).

Some students have postgraduate credits that they have acquired as part of their Initial Teacher Education or as a part of other accredited CPD. Through negotiation with the Course Leader, you may be able to carry these credits over to this masters degree.
