Overview:

Do you want to become a nurse? Successful completion of this adult nursing degree will allow you entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register as a qualified nurse.

Modern nursing is an exciting profession where nurses seeks to care for the patient holistically. The adult nursing degree combines theory and practice in an innovative way, to focus on the care of people across a wide range of healthcare settings. This course is part of the Nursing and Midwifery subject area which is ranked Top In Wales for course satisfaction and teaching – Guardian League Table 2021.

The field of adult nursing covers all aspects of caring for adolescents and adults with a range of health issues and challenges. During your nurse training, you’ll be based in our state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Centre and will also undertake work placements in a range of settings to ensure you have experience from a variety of areas within nursing.

Typical Access to HE Offer
Must complete 60 credits overall with at least 45 at level 3 and 15 at Level 2. Of the 45 credits at level 3, you will need a minimum of 24 Distinctions, 18 Merits and 3 passes.

Additional Requirements
GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances.

Equivalent qualifications considered are Essential Skills Level Two in Communication and Application of Number, or Functional Skills Level Two in English and Mathematics. (Must have been achieved since 2016)

This may be for year one entry, or advanced entry to year two or three of a course where this is possible.

Teaching

You’ll study with students from all fields and other professions, as well as having sessions specific to your field. There’s also the requirement to work with clients and patients from other fields, so you can care for patients with multiple and complex needs.

The nursing degree lasts a minimum of 42 weeks. Supervised practice placements are an integral part of the programme. There’s an equal split between theory and practice, which is integrated throughout all our nursing courses, Each academic year is split into four terms.

In term one, you will study in theory block in University followed by block in clinical practice. This pattern is repeated through the three-year programme. Please note that holidays are fixed for the duration of your nurse training.

Assessment

You will be assessed using various methods. Whilst on placement you will be assigned a practice assessor/supervisor who will assess your achievements of the Practice Learning Outcomes.

 The theoretical component will involve written assignments, case studies, examinations, development of health promotion tools, computer-based medication dosage calculations and clinically based reflective assignments.

COURSE DETAILS

Accreditations
The University of South Wales is an NMC Approved Education Institution (AEI). Graduates from our adult nursing degree can apply to join the NMC professional register and start to practise in the UK.

Placements

Supervised placements are an integral part of the adult nursing degree. These are in our partner health boards, as well as in the community and independent sector.

You will have practice opportunities across a wide range of healthcare settings that include community, hospital, palliative care, nursing homes and GP surgeries, developing key skills that will enhance your employability.

When you are working with your mentor in clinical practice, you have to work the shift patterns of the clinical area to which you are allocated.

There is also an opportunity to study and practice abroad in a number of countries during your second year. This will enable you to gain an understanding of different health care systems.

Additional Costs

As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.

Our nursing degrees prepare you for the challenges of modern healthcare through the right mix of knowledge, skills and experience. The theory you learn in the classroom is reinforced by practical learning on campus and work- based learning. Employers are keen to recruit our nursing graduates because they know they are well-prepared, confident, competent and safe practitioners.

Depending on experience and training, graduates of the adult nursing degree can reach the highest levels of the NHS. Once qualified, many adult nurses take extra courses to specialise in areas such as cancer care, women’s health, emergency department, critical care, practice nursing, health visiting or school nursing. With this adult nursing degree, you can also work abroad. Registered nurses from the UK are highly regarded throughout the world.Salary

Fully qualified nurses start on salaries of £27,055 on Band 5 of the NHS Agenda for Change Pay Rates. Experienced nurses such as a nurse team leader on Band 6, earn between £33,706 to £40,588. At more senior levels such as nurse advanced, modern matron and nurse consultant (Bands 7 to 8c) salaries range from £41,659 to £77,274.
