MSc Cyber Security, Risk and Resilience

Overview:

With the increasing sophistication of threats to the cyber landscape coupled with the rapid increase in attempts to disrupt our critical systems and gain commercial and personal data, there is an ever-increasing demand for high skilled cyber security graduates to defend individuals and organisations from a diverse range of cybercrimes with roles that focus on the risk, management and incident resilience aspects of the cyber sector.

Through a range of learning experiences, you will gain the knowledge of how to identify and treat risk and create resilience Information Security plans and policies that will support the management and operations of the organisation. The course is part of the National Cyber Security Academy, which brings the University, Welsh Government and industry experts together to tackle the skills gap and create experts who can fight against cybercrime.

You’ll be joining us in learning how to defend our communities from cybercrime through our multi-award-winning National Cyber Security Academy, which features cutting-edge learning environments including a CISCO Networking Academy, Secure Operations Centre, and Digital Forensics Laboratory. Focusing on a range of cyber topics such as system security, digital forensic investigation, and risk & governance, you’ll gain a broad range of cyber security skills in an authentic, hands-on environment, with the opportunity to work towards being a Certified Cyber Ops Associate, before specialising in either digital forensics or security.

This course is aimed at graduates with a minimum 2:2 Honours degree or equivalent who would like to broaden their existing knowledge and open up a new career path.

Applications from engineering, IT, science, mathematics or business graduates in particular are welcomed.

All entrants must have strong numeracy and IT skills.

The course welcomes international applicants and requires an English level of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component or equivalent.

If an applicant does not meet the desired entry criteria, an interview should be offered with the Course leader.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

You’ll be taught in blocks of 8 weeks at the first Academic Centre of Excellence to be awarded Gold by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – now one of only ten nationally.  You’ll gain the very latest techniques from our cyber security professionals and industry partners – in practical workshops aligned to the NCSC’s Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CyBOK). You’ll then apply these skills to real-world problems, with the opportunity to work on projects with our industry partners.

Modules

  • MSc Project
    Employ autonomy and originality in the application of the knowledge developed on the programme and research skills to a complex problem. This module provides an opportunity for the student to investigate a topical, award relevant issue of their choice in some depth. To produce a justified solution to a significant problem that is informed by a critical review of research. To further develop the student’s investigative, research, writing and presentation skills as a self-directed, autonomous learner.
  • Security Management and Incident Response 
    Develop advanced skills and critical understanding of complex issues surrounding security management, operations and incident response.
  • Legislation, Risk and Governance in Cyber Security
    This module will ensure you develop a critical understanding of UK and EU legislation and organisational responsibility in relation to Cyberspace and Information Technology.
  • Secure Code and Applied Cryptography
    This module introduces secure coding practices, testing procedures and programming concepts. You will develop a critical understanding of modern applied cryptography.
  • Leadership and transformation change in a Digital age
    This module will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed for leadership in a digital context. Supporting transformational change and  opportunities in complex organisational environments.
  • Cyber Risk and Resilience
    This module will develop skills and knowledge of the risks and vulnerabilities associated with cyber operation and information assurance with internal and external systems.
  • Practical Application Security
    This module focuses on review of Web applications, IoT-based applications and mobile Applications Introduction to application development environments Introduction to technologies such as HTML, XML, PHP, MySQL, Node.JS, MongoDB, etc. Three-tier application architecture ammunication Latest OWASP Top 10 Secure Development Life Cycle (SDLC), DevSecOps and Privacy by Design Analysis, evaluation and synthesis of various types of cyber-attacks and corresponding countermeasures.

Teaching

You will spend between 12-16 hours each week on lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions. You will also spend around four hours per week, per module, on coursework, general reading, and other preparation.  You will work on a significant project which will allow you to develop and demonstrate data collection and analysis and to development management techniques.

Career opportunities are excellent – the demand for specialists in this area continues to rise as companies become increasingly dependent on computers and the internet. On graduation, you will be equipped for careers that require in-depth knowledge of technical security issues.

With education to Masters level now the recognised professional level of competence, graduates will be better placed to pursue careers in industry, or continue their interest in computer systems security through a computing research degree or computing PhD.

Possible Career Paths

Potential roles include systems administrator, seurity penetration tester or information security consultant, and skills gained strongly relate to the roles of information security analyst and IT security co-ordinator. Potential career paths include:

Additional Costs

As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.

 

CAREERS

Career opportunities for those with a cyber security qualification continue to grow with many roles offering an interesting, challenging and rewarding environment to work in. From implementing security policies and managing protective measures in network systems, to advising organisations on how to reduce risks and their vulnerability, there are a variety of opportunities throughout the computer industry.

Typical roles commonly associated with cyber security include information security and risk analysts, IT security managers and network security consultants. Graduates could also consider a computing research degree or computing PhD.
